To assess the predictive accuracy of the aforementioned model, statistical methods can be applied to control how well the measured and calculated values fit. In case of regression models, the coefficient of determination (R 2) can be used. The R 2 value can range between 0 and 1. A value close to 1 indicates a high accuracy of modelled () and observed measurement data (). The coefficient is determined using an equation (Eq. 4.1), based on modelled values (), observed values () and mean observed values () (Fahrmeir et al. 2007, pp. 160):
